Oil particle counting for in-service lubricants and hydraulic fluids gives the number of particles within specific size ranges. It is an indication of cleanliness, one of the most important characteristics for proper lubrication. Contaminant particles cause excessive wear, initiate rolling element bearing fatigue and clog filters.

The most common unit of reporting fluid cleanliness is the ISO Code System (ISO 4406:99). However, there are other methods used in classifying the number and size of particles such as NAS-1638 and SAE-AS4059. The LaserNet Fines has the built-in capability to provide accurate particle counts for these and more standards in dirty and clean samples. It has the additional capability to provide shape classification and outlines of particles greater than 20 µm.
